Competency based interviews – an overview

 What are Competency-based interview Questions?

Competency-based questions are used by many interviewers and HR professionals to help assess and predict your behaviour in certain situations.  Organisations will have

already defined the competencies required for a specific role and will devise questions to assess these.

Why do companies use competency-based interviews?

Competency-based interview questions are increasingly used by organisations as a useful tool in their selection process.   CBI’s are thought to be more objective than traditional interviewing styles and are a useful way to determine whether the applicant meets the requirements of the job and is likely to possess the competencies to do it well.

What competencies am I likely to be questioned on?

Every job will have a specific set of relevant competencies but there are a number of general competencies you should be aware of:

  • Communication skills
  • Team Work
  • Planning and Organising
  • Delivering Results
  • Interpersonal Skills
  • Building relationships
  • Use of Initiative
  • Analytical Thinking
  • Strategic Thinking
  • Developing Others

You will often be aware of the competencies to be assessed prior to interview, this will either be from the original advert/job description or HR may make you aware of them.  This will allow you to prepare some answers prior to interview.
